The painting is only completely in place when it has the balance between poetry and power - between the raw and the fine, the stories and all the unspoken…
There must be something to explore for the viewer.
I often work in many coats before the last coats of oil paint come on, e.g. I build a plot with putty, old book pages, tear from a newspaper or a poster column… In this way, fragments of both culture and language lie and mix with the stories. Although the paintings are ambiguous, both time and nature often also play a central role - both the inner and the outer nature. To me, painting is very much both sensation and narrative.
